On Wednesday April 3, 2019 nearly 200 law enforcement officials closed in on the CVE Technology Group in Allen, Texas, fifteen miles northeast of Dallas, where they detained over sixty percent of the company’s employees. That percentage works out to nearly 300 people, all of whom federal authorities have found to be working in the United States illegally. This raid took place after investigations relating to various tips that the company was hiring aliens aware of their illegal status. Most of those detained were released the same day of their arrest on terms of humanitarian reasons but with an immigration court date issued, while the rest remain in Texas detention centers. Of these aliens nine had already been deported previously and eight more had been given final deportation orders.
The CVE Technology Group raid has exemplified one of the most considerable cases of illegal employment and subsequent detainment in recent years with the impact being nearly 300 jobs requiring unskilled labor taken off the job market and away from American citizens by illegal immigrants. Even so this bust has only been one small part of President Trump’s immigration clampdown as he announced recently his ultimatum for the Mexican government. “We’re going to give them a one-year warning, and if the drugs don’t stop or largely stop, we’re going to put tariffs on Mexico and products, in particular cars. And if that doesn’t stop the drugs, we close the border” Trump said to White House reporters on Thursday. As powerful a motivator for Mexico as that may be, it is even a lesser threat than the one President Trump issued a week back, soon after the Customs and Border Patrol had released a statement putting the United States on track to reach 100,000 arrests on the southern border in March alone. In his original statement President Trump threatened immediate closure of the southern border unless Mexico put a complete and total end to illegal immigration. Mexico evidenced attempts to prevent illegal border crossing following this threat and President Trump exhibited a willingness to negotiate once Mexico proved their willingness to help end the border conflict and add their efforts to the war on drugs through his new set of stipulations. These measures in addition to the already existent National Emergency at the border, additional border patrol, increased border barriers, and additional fencing, prove the seriousness of President Trump’s crackdown on employment of illegal aliens as well as the focus on border security. If Mexico fails to take the necessary steps within the next year, serious consequences to the United States and Mexico trade relations may greatly alter each economy.
There is no mistake to be made when recognizing that President Trump is seeking to fulfill his 2016 campaign promises. His platform was heavily supported by his goal to strengthen immigration policies and add an element of power and control to all United States borders. As the 2020 election nears, President Trump’s successes or failures as relate to border control are likely going to have a major impact on the outcome of the race.
