Organization Spotlight: SUB

As we pass over the half-way mark in the semester, it isn’t difficult to witness a rise in apathy, stress levels, and a painful depletion of energy. It can be easy to struggle to find free forms of entertainment to help us maintain our sanity. However, one organization continues to find ways to entertain students and bring little moments of joy into one of the most challenging experiences of a young adult’s life. This week, the organization spotlight falls on the Student Union Board or SUB for short. SUB is a student organization on campus that goes above and beyond to provide many free social events to students. They take pride in living up to their motto “We do the fun stuff.” Some students might recognize SUB for their infamous Stuff-a-Plush events; however, they offer many opportunities for joy throughout the year.

As November rolls around, the Student Union Board will be offering numerous events to students (again free of charge). To kick off the month, the organization will be hosting their Fall Kickback event at the Puck on November 1st at 5:00 p.m. During this time, they will be providing free s’mores and other fun activities. The following day, they will be throwing a Miner Tailgate before the home football game. Inside of the Gale Bullman parking lot, SUB will be bringing live music and giveaways to students, and other favorite student organizations will be in attendance.

Another interesting type of event that the Student Union Board likes to host is their comedy shows. The organization brings in different comedians throughout the year to give students some well-deserved laughs. Two appearances are already scheduled for November 10th and 16th. Additionally, SUB regularly hosts movie nights; these showings are a great opportunity to relax, as well as to take advantage of the free popcorn, soda, and snacks. They will be showing The Lion King (2019) on November 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in Havener’s St. Pat’s Ballroom. On November 6th, they will be playing Spider-Man: Far From Home, and on November 21st, SUB will be collaborating with Missouri S&T’s Mars Rover Design Team to present a space-themed movie in honor of the team’s Space Week.

One unique event scheduled for November 15th is the Bob Ross Paint-Along. This exciting experience will take place inside of the Missouri-Ozark Room in Havener at 4:00 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to paint along to old episodes of Bob Ross, and they will also be provided with snacks. The following Monday (November 18th), SUB will be hosting Brownies and Board Games in the Havener Atrium starting at 6:00 p.m. Students can keep up with these events and so many more by going to the Student Union Board’s OrgSync page or following them on social media.

While it is clear to see that SUB provides numerous outlets of entertainment to students throughout the year, it is important to note the impact that the organization truly has. Caleb Roth, a student who is highly involved in the organization, explained his favorite part of SUB as “being able to have a direct impact on the lives of S&T students. I think Rolla can be a very stressful place much of the time, so it’s important to have activities and events where students can just enjoy themselves for a bit and take some of the pressure off. It means a lot to me to be able to have the ability to help with that.”
