Leach Theatre Performances
The Missouri S&T Jazz Band and Orchestras opened up November with performances on Friday, November 1st and Sunday, November 3rd. The S&T Jazz Combo started the night, under the direction of Dr. Kyle Wernke, at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening and their concert featured the music of Sammy Nestico, Gordon Goodwin, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, and others. The Joe and Miner big bands then followed.
The S&T Jazz Ensemble is open to any student that wishes to join. Jazz Ensemble classes give students the opportunity to perform big band music, solos, and sing. Auditions are held to designate lead trumpet, trombone, alto saxophone, and tenor saxophone positions as well as the select jazz soloists for each piece.
The Missouri S&T Symphony and Chamber Orchestras performed at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday November 3rd. The Chamber Orchestra performed multiple pieces which included Patty Nicholas’ transcribal of “Rubber Dolly”pieces created by James Horner for the movie “Legends of the Fall”, and Jean Sibelius’ works”Andante Festivo” and “Romanze in C for String Orchestra”. The Symphony Orchestra then played “Symphony No. 4 in F minor” written by Pyotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky.
The Symphony Orchestra consists of members from S&T, the Rolla community, and surrounding communities. They recreate masterworks from the baroque through the contemporary era. The Chamber Orchestra is mostly composed of strings, but does invite wind and percussion players to participate for select pieces.
Tickets for the Jazz Band and Orchestra concerts were free ages 18 and under and to all S&T students possessing a valid S&T ID. Tickets were available for the public to purchase for $5 in advance Monday thru Friday at the Leach Theatre Box Office between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. or $7 at the door. Tickets could also be purchased online or over the phone.
Missouri S&T also offers various other bands for students to partake in throughout the year including the Symphonic Band, the Wind Symphony, Pep Band, and even has available individual lessons for students interested in jazz improvisation, playing brass, or learning drum set techniques. The Symphonic Band performs traditional and contemporary wind pieces and the Wind Symphony focuses on challenging classical to contemporary wind pieces. Pep Band is student led and plays pop music at the Missouri S&T Men’s and Women’s Basketball games or other requested events such as PRO Days.
More S&T performances will occur this fall with the S&T Concert Bands performing Sunday, November 10, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., the S&T Choir Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 7:00 p.m., and the S&T Performing Arts Concert on Sunday, December 8th, 2019 at 2:00 p.m..
Missouri S&T’s Leach Theatre will host Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood’s The Scared Scriptless Tour as a part of the Campus Performing Arts Series on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.. Adult tickets will be $55 and youth and student tickets will be $50 with $25 rush tickets available the day of the show, when a valid S&T student ID is presented. Also as a part of the Campus Performing Arts Series, Leach Theatre will host A Winter Cirque Reverie performed by Cirque-tacular’s Shimmer. The show will be Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.. Adult tickets will be $30 and student and youth tickets will be $25. Rush tickets will be available for $15 the day of the show for students with a valid S&T student ID.
