Greek Week 2019 Heats Up

Greek Week 2019 is about halfway complete at the time of this printing. Fraternities and sororities are competing in a wide variety of events in order to see who will hoist the trophy on Saturday evening. After Opening Games at the Vichy Airport Fields Pike leads the fraternities and Zeta leads the sororities. There are still a lot of points to be won however, so it is still anyone’s game. Greek Week officially began on Thursday the 5th with opening ceremonies, an event that was supposed to include a processional of this year’s godz and goddesses, a relay race, hercules/atalanta 100 meter dash, and an impersonation contest. Unfortunately, due to an issue with the generator the procession and impersonation contest were canceled as there was no sound system to use. Chi Omega and the Delta Sigma/TKE pairing won the relay race and the hercules from Delta Sigma and atalanta from ZTA won the dash.

On Saturday houses competed in several events; ultimate frisbee, cornhole, chariot race, volleyball, and the new event spike ball. There were also several different hercules/atalanta competitions. The competition was fierce and student athletes from all houses did a fantastic job. Due to the level of play, many of the games ran long, forcing some games to be pushed to this week in order to ensure that everyone would be able to leave the fields on time. On Sunday there was the BBQ competition, talent show, and trivia contest. The proceeds from the BBQ competition going to the winner’s charity. Monday was the speaker and Tuesday had the egg toss, three legged race, and relay as well as the basketball tournament in the evening. Today is the canned castle competition, where select members of each house will attempt to wow the judges by creating a structure from aluminum cans which will then be donated to G.R.A.C.E., a local charity. Thursday is Greek Pride Day, where members of fraternities and sororities can gain points by wearing their letters on campus. It is also the chariot and banner competitions and tire roll, football challenge and limbo. Finally Thursday evening will be the dodgeball tournament. Friday will be the Linking Hearts festival, a fun competition that also helps to match children with potential foster parents. On Saturday we will return to the Vichy Fields to compete in closing games, which include soccer, punt/pass/kick, hillbilly golf, an obstacle course, and tug of war. There were also several events throughout the year leading up to Greek Week. Events such as Out Til Midnight and the aluminum can drive that help raise money for St. Jude and for scholarships respectively.

Greek Week is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. The representatives from IFC and Panhel have put in hundreds of hours to ensure that events can run as smoothly as possible. With three years in their respective councils, the senior reps are finally getting a chance to relax and enjoy the week. This year the top god and goddess were Jonathon Thomas from Sigma Nu and Alissa Reynolds from Kappa Delta. All of the godz and goddesses are enjoying their week and are getting a chance to judge events such as the BBQ cook-off. All in all, with many more events to compete in, the week is nearing the end, but it is impossible to say who will come out on top.
