Do You Know Your Local State Representative and Senator?

Danielle Sheahan

Do you feel like you have something to say about the government and the things you support in your community? It is a basic right of every citizen to keep local representatives aware of their districts’ needs and wants. Additionally, it is beneficial for representatives to hear their citizens’ constructive criticism and relative opinions. State representatives and senators work for the people of their districts and if they do not know what their district wants then how is the district supposed to get what they deserve? If there is a situation our representatives do not know about, they need to be informed of it as soon as humanly possible, in doing so, one must one who their representatives are. Knowing who the local representatives are for the Rolla, Missouri area is relevant to the typical S&T student because the university is a state funded school. The decisions that the district representatives make directly affect the university’s campus.

Rolla is a part of District 121 for the Missouri House of Representatives and District 16 for the Missouri Senate. These districts represent different counties, but both encompass Phelps County.

District 121 includes Phelps and Pulaski: For more information about Missouri House of Representatives District 121 visit: http://statisticalatlas.com/state-lower-legislative-district/Missouri/District-121/Overview

District 16 includes Camden, Pulaski, Phelps, Dent and Crawford:

The representatives that work for the districts that Rolla is a part of are Representative Keith Frederick and Senator Dan Brown. Keith Frederick is a Republican and has been in his position as the District 121 Representative for six years now. He was born on November 6, 1952 in St. Louis, Missouri and received his college education at the Saint Louis College of Pharmacy in 1976. He went on to receive his DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1981. He has used his experiences as an orthopedic surgeon and owner of Frederick Hardwoods and Flooring to benefit the committees he has been assigned to. He is the chair of the Health and Mental Health Policy and serves on the Government Efficiency, Joint Committee on the Life Sciences, Special Committee on Employment Security Committees. Frederick currently lives in Rolla, Missouri where he is a practicing Orthopedic surgeon. He has also recently received National State Legislator of The Year from the Am Psychological Association in Washington D.C..

In contrast, Senator Dan Brown is a Republican, who has been working as the District 16 Senator since 2011. He was born on December 22, 1950 in Solo, Missouri and he received his undergraduate college education at University of Missouri-Columbia. He then earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He has used his experiences as a Veterinarian and a family man to benefit his assigned committees. He is currently the chair of the Veterans’ Affairs and Health Committee and serves on the Agriculture, Food Production, and Outdoor Resources, Appropriations, Education, Life Sciences, and Missouri Health Net Committees, as well as the Joint Committee on MO Health Net. Brown also currently resides in Rolla, Missouri and has a wife named Kathy and two children Danett and Justin.

It is important to know who is representing the district’s ideals to be certain the official is reflecting the same ideals as the district’s citizens. If the public servant is unaware of any concerns the district (or S&Ts student) might have, their contact information is listed below. There are also URLs where one can find additional information about Representative Frederick and Senator Brown and their districts.
